Tesla Chronicles: All in the Neighborhood...

Well, Tesla is in the news again...and it isn't any better for San Jose than any of the other Tesla Chronicles on Watch Dog...

On the day when the San Jose City Council patted themselves on the back for the Green Vision, the big green fish that got away is Tesla. Losing Tesla to Southern California or New Mexico is one thing, but Santa Clara and Fremont now appear to be in a strong position to land Tesla. San Jose's neighbors stealing the green prom date...

In responding to the news that Fremont may become the new home of Tesla, the City of San Jose did not issue a statement saying, "We think trading Tesla for the A's makes good sense for us."

And an inside the media tid bit:

The Mercury News doesn't have this story, the Business Journal does. Kudos BJournal...

While I applauded our city's agility in landing the initial Tesla deal, it was more from a perspective of proving that government could move at the speed of business, rather than anything green.

Auto manufacturing is anything but green. Batteries are some of the dirtiest things on the planet to manufacture and dispose of. And electric cars just move the pollution from the tailpipe to the smokestack.

Sure, Tesla would have been cool and symbolic, but I don't think it was that big a loss. Neither should the city.

Pat,

It is much better to control pollution from centralized production than at millions of use points. And vehicles rely on the dirty burning of carbon-based fuels, while electricity can (and will) become cleaner as California moves to 20%+ renewables. Just think of the house with solar panels charging their electric vehicle. Now you've eliminated emissions from the equation. Can't do that with the internal combustion engine.

Sure, the manufacture of vehicles leaves a footprint, but assuming the same number of cars on the road, the one that is clean after leaving the lot is preferable.

We continue to get denial of the effect of oil burning on our environment from those with no credentials except anti-environmental ones.
