Watch Dog can always count on San Jose Councilmember Sam Liccardo for witty repartee. This time he said, "I'm glad to say that if the City Council has not sufficiently beaten this dead horse. We can always count on lawyers to do so," about the seemingly never-ending Little Saigon challenge. (Perhaps Liccardo forgot about his Harvard law degree?) Lee’s Sandwiches Henry Huong Le is being accused of tricking business owners into signing a petition against “Little Saigon.” San Jose attorney Minh Steven Dovan filed the lawsuit yesterday but (unbelievably) dismisses any thought that the timing is more than coincidental...
Ausaf “Omar” Siddiqui, the former Fry’s exec/Baccarat player/embezzler will appear in federal court this week to face charges. In advance, the Feds are raiding Vegas casinos to make sure what happened in Vegas gets into the case in San Jose.
When San Jose’s Mayor Chuck Reed was giving his Celebrity critique of the Super Bowl ads he forgot to mention the brief porn interruption that happened on some COMCAST subscribers' televisions. Apparently Eddie Garcia's absence is having an impact over there...Luckily for everyone, Pete Constant was shielded from the pornography because it only happened in Tucson. Perhaps to avoid second-hand porn in San Jose, we should ban television...
Treading close to the danger line, Palo Alto Schools Superintendent Kevin Skelly says low income/Black/Latino kids can’t compete with the kids of Stanford grads. Skelly’s colleague Santa Clara County Office of Education Superintendent disagrees. Chuck Weis says, "Teaching is more powerful than what kids bring to school with them as background.'' California’s chief educator Jack O’Connell also believes the gap can be closed. Of course, with California ranking anywhere from 43rd to 48th in the nation for education…
Letter writers ask Mr. Roadshow/Gary Richards who pays for fixes to the nasty 280-880-Stevens Creek interchange? Seems even the dismal economy can’t keep shoppers away from Valley Fair/Santana Row and the dreaded off-ramp.
The Merc.’s Joe Rodriguez shares the names of a new group hoping to turn around the moribund Mexican Heritage Plaza. Last week, the City Council appointed a baker’s dozen including San Jose Taiko’s Roy Hirabayashi, community leader Olivia Mendiola, artist/retired SJSU Professor Erin Goodwin-Guerrero, the head of Los Lupenos Maria de la Rosa and Chris Esparza with Giant Creative Services. Together with the Redevelopment Agency they hope to take the 10 year old, beautiful but rarely-used, Plaza and bring it life – and try make sure the City doesn’t have to bail it out yet again.
Mountain View Whisman and Mountain View-Los Altos School Districts may have to look at ways to slash a combined $5 million from their budgets. It looks like layoffs may be ahead.
San Jose Revealed received a mountain of email (really?) about the Merc’s “expose” on Vic Ajlouny – while thanking those who sent it reminds them there was nothing new in the story.
Morgan Hill’s Downtown Association is asking the City Council to delay a decision on a $20 million project until the Association can discuss all options with City staff. Mayor Steve Tate expressed frustration with the proposed delay and Councilmember Greg Sellers said any delay now would mean a delay later in opening. Perhaps an opening not during the Great Recession is preferable?
The Gilroy Dispatch wants to hear from you: Should Gilroy’s Mayor Al Pinheiro and the City Council be recalled over layoffs of City employees? Very productive Mr. Gilroy Dispatch...
On San Jose Inside, Councilmember Pierluigi Oliverio pops off on the subject of campaign donations – and who should be allowed to make them. This all stems from the argument about the 'competition policy' that the Council discussed (and discussed and discussed) last Tuesday.
On a campaign-related note...
Mission City Lantern gives props and issues concerns about the Santa Clara County Democratic Party – adding that there appears to be no Republican counterpart aside from Vic Ajlouny (who actually lives in Nebraska).

(late again) Morning News Round-Up 1.14.09: Disappointed Edition...
Sorry to disappoint you with the long delay...Watch Dog has been recovering from the Mayor's State of the City (Budget)...more on that later (or tomorrow)...
On to old news...
Garlic Ta-Ta’s closed before it ever opened. Ante Bilic withdrew his application Tuesday morning for a gentleman's club in Gilroy after news broke of the 10 year old prohibition of flaunting ta-ta’s in Gilroy. The sleuthing was uncovered by Home Depot's lawyers. No word yet if the more than $4,000 in fees already paid to Gilroy by Bilic will be refunded. Bilic did not say, "The whole experience with Gilroy was like being in a gentleman's club for an evening -- it's fun while it lasted, but we leave disappointed..."
Speaking of disappointed...at yesterday's Council meeting, San Jose City Councilmembers heard from new Retirement Director Russell Crosby. Crosby described the loss of more than $1 billion from the City employee pension funds. Mayor Chuck Reed said, "We need to restructure the [oversight] boards to bring in outside expertise..." You think? Could this be a signal that Reed-ally/pensioner/pension board overseer/Councilmember Pete Constant is on his way off the board after a dismal two years? Councilmember Sam Liccardo seems to think so, saying “…something is seriously broken here...” calling out massive market losses, a travel audit that uncovered excessive and undocumented expenses, and multi-million dollar over-payments.
Vegas hoteliers called him only “Mr. S” and catered to his every wish -- bowls of Glitterati Mentissimo, chilled Dom Perignon and Kurosawa Sake, silk socks, porn, and (of course) condoms. (Disappointed) John, Randy, and Dave Fry know him as the check-kiting/former exec/jailbird Ausaf Umar Siddiqui. Thanks to the Merc., we all know both sides of the Baccarat embezzler. We've learned that the rumors are untrue that Boots Del Biaggio has applied for a job at Fry's...
San Jose Redevelopment Agency is hoping that divided loyalties may prevent the Santa Clara Supervisors from fighting to prevent the Agency from taking a larger share of property taxes. Will former Councilmembers Dave Cortese, Ken Yeager, and George Shirakawa, Jr. side with the needs of the County and area school districts in battling with San Jose over property taxes? The hearing is set for March in San Jose, stayed tuned...Mr. Mavrogenes, don't be too disappointed if the old adage holds true that "where you stand depends on where you sit"...Dave, Ken, and George sit somewhere new now.
Once a month teachers and students descend upon Barker Elementary School on a Friday night (a.k.a. parents' Date Night) while the school gets to raise some much needed funds. Computer lab specialist Ann West said the kids love hanging out in the library, playing twister, surfing the net, and getting crafty. The funds raised help close budget gaps...
Los Altos native Sargent Binkley has been found not guilty by reason of insanity for robbing a Mountain View pharmacy at gunpoint. The landmark decision handed down by a Santa Clara County jury recognized post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) following addiction to morphine as the cause of Binkley's insanity. Prosecutor Deborah Medved argued Binkley was sane and said the law does not allow for insanity based on addiction -- just insanity due to Twinkies...
San Jose welcomed it’s first Indo-American onto the City Council yesterday. Ash Kalra says he didn’t run as an ethnic candidate but is proud to represent his community.
San Jose Revealed wants you to Tweet sjrevealed from San Jose Mayor Chuck Reed’s annual breakfast (as if Revealed won’t be there...). Revealed also takes time to liken the Madison Nguyen fiasco to a coup in which the beleaguered San Jose Councilmember's peers are attempting to take her out – and insert a new Vietnamese leader who will obediently take orders.
San Jose Inside weighs in on the new Chief Yahoo! Carol Bartz, formerly of AutoDesk. Bartz could be a refreshing change saying she wanted to help Yahoo! “get some friggin’ breathing room.” Watch Dog likes the idea of a 60 year old, female, Yahoo! talking about kickin’ butt...

Morning News Round-Up – 12.24.08: Pre-Christmas Edition (complete with cover-ups, gambling, and fraud...)
District Attorney Dolores Carr could have opened the proceedings of the secret grand jury for the sake of sunshine/transparency/public trust, her predecessor George Kennedy did so for controversial cases. Instead, she opted to keep the doors of justice closed tight when dealing with the drunk driving controversy/cover-up two San Jose Police Officers are connected to. This has led to the Merc. Editorial folks heightened suspicion of a police cover-up. Watch Dog doesn't want to get overly political looking for a reason why Carr didn't/won't open up the proceedings looking at police officers (possibly) behaving badly...wait, yes we do. Perhaps it is a political 'thank you' gift to her strongest campaign supporters? ...or her spousal relationship with the San Jose PD?
The parents of Carlos Sousa, Jr. (one of the dudes that was mauled by a tiger) have filed a lawsuit against San Francisco and the zoological society that operates the San Francisco Zoo. The suit says, "Defendants ignored warnings by San Francisco Zoo employees that the Siberian tiger wall was insufficient." San Jose residents Sousa and friends Kulbir Dhaliwal and Amritpal "Paul" Dhaliwal have been accused of provoking the tiger that escaped from her cage and mauled Sousa last year at this time. In the past year, we've all learned that the Dhaliwal boys aren't the angels we thought they were...In fact, the tiger-baiting was the first step...since then, the Dhaliwal family have faced a series of run-ins with the law, including public drunkenness (in California’s drunk arrest capital, San Jose), resisting arrest, shoplifting, and reckless driving. Paul Dhaliwal is currently in prison for a parole violation...This is the story that keeps on giving...
Fry’s Electronics has 34 stores in 9 states. They are known to be obsessively focused on security -- "may I see your receipt"...This makes the tale of the gambling executive who defrauded the store (and vendors) out of $65 million through wire fraud and money laundering even more unresistable/ironic. Omar defrauded 5 vendors of $65 million...but with an estimated $162 million in gambling debts it’s only a matter of time before others step forward. (Plus, today we learned that the dude's vice was Baccarat...how very James Bond...)
Campbell police pushed the ever present day laborers away from Home Depot in an attempt to get them out of Campbell. No such luck, the 100 or so day laborers moved a short distance away to a Burger King whose customers are not complaining. Mayor Jane Kennedy says the solution is a center where the day laborers can find work and added, "the City can't afford it, and property owners can't do it, so until we have someone willing to, what else are we going to do?"
Gilroy is closing their museum effective February 1, 2009 as a part of the economic crisis according to Tom Haglund the City Administrator. It is kind of shame...Watch Dog enjoyed the place...
Los Gatos/Monte Sereno Police came to the aid of...fighting deer. Two deer somehow got their antlers tied together – a cruel person’s idea of humor perhaps – and slipped down the embankment above Blossom Hill Road. The Police had to use a saw, while perched on the roof of a car, to release the deer from each other. Never a dull moment...
Generosity is not new to Jennifer Krach...and Carole Leigh Hutton, President and CEO of United Way Silicon Valley is delighted with the $100,000 challenge grant Karch has made to benefit the Emergency Assistance Network. Krach believes in putting her money where her mouth is asking, “Oh my God, how can you not care about what's going on?” OMG! Too much IMing for uber-generous Krach...
San Jose Revealed provides a creative update to Dicken’s tale with the ghosts of Christmas Past (Tom McEnery), Recent (Ron Gonzales) and Future (Forest Williams – really?) appearing to a groggy Ebenezer Reed. Merry and Happy Revealed...
James Rowen at Mission City Lantern shares his personal philosophy (confront and defeat reality), a secret (he’s unbalanced and unfair), and the first political blogger (Ben Franklin).

Morning News Round-Up – 12.23.08: More Drunk News...
Congratulations, Sergeant Manion and Officer D’Arrigo. You received a get out of jail free card from the secret Grand Jury, just in time for Christmas. These guys were not indicted for their part in the Sandra Woodall drunk driving cover up – they may not be so lucky when Chief Rob Davis begins his own internal investigation...but Watch Dog expects they'll be ok.
The Merc. recommends the drunk Task Force installed by Mayor Reed and Councilmember Campos focus first on the wildly disproportionate arrests of Latinos. What the Editorial doesn't say is that this Task Force won't start until 3 months after the problem was identified by their reporter Sean Webby and that the Task Force won't make any recommendations until April...six months?!
Make note of this name, Ausaf Umar Siddiqui. He managed to scam Fry’s Electronics, and vendors, for $65 million since 2005. This story includes “secret backroom” deals, masquerading as an owner, casino jets, exotic cars, and swarms of FBI agents invading Fry’s to take Siddiqui away in handcuffs. Fry’s spokesman Manuel Valerio says that while Siddiqui made off with millions “neither Fry’s nor Fry’s customers were damaged by this.” Watch Dog wonders if the Fry’s family would agree. (As an aside, does anyone out there remember rising political star Manuel Valerio? Same guy...)
It’s a big week for travelers. The weather around the country is not cooperating. If air travel is on your mind, be patient and bring your sense of humor. David Vossbrink, spokesman at the Mineta International Airport, says that the cancellation of hundred’s of flights across the country due to blizzards raging from Seattle to Chicago to Washington, D.C., were most troublesome for San Jose flights. And take it from Vossbrink -- he knows something about patience and sense of humor from his last job...
Mr. Roadshow received a request to make 2009 the Year of the Pedestrian – making travel safer for those on foot. Pedestrian deaths are on the rise, making streets more pedestrian (and bike) friendly seems a logical solution.
San Jose Revealed does a holiday rundown of the less than cheerful variety. Revealed is surprised that the ball playing skills of the President-elect’s appointees are more newsworthy than torture. Well, perhaps Revealed never saw the Bush Basketball Team -- Cheney sucked! We needed a change...
Morgan Hill looks at budget cuts that include shutting off residential streetlights, letting potholes go unrepaired, shutting down playgrounds, letting park turf die, and decreasing code enforcement. Mayor Steve Tate says, "It's not anything real dramatic that you would notice a whole bunch. Maybe if you're going to a park every day, and see half the grass gone, you'd notice that. It depends. Generally, I don't think you will." Mayor Tate -- voters have a funny way of noticing such things. You know who else notices such things?...the Morgan Hill Police showed up in force with nearly half the department at the Council meeting to protest the loss of three police officers.
The Los Gatos Observer posts photos of the Monte Sereno and Los Gatos Councils being sworn in. Watch Dog is a little confused as the Observer ran the story of the Los Gatos swearing in on November 18 – complete with photos of Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner delivering the oath of office. Is news so slow in Los Gatos that the Observer needs to rerun old news?

Morning News Round-Up -- 11.25.08
If it's a good idea, why the secrecy? Teachers in the Alum Rock and East Side Union School Districts heard about a rumored campus swap -- Alum Rock unloads Pala Middle School in exchange for Independence Adult Center. The roughly 10 year old Independence was built and paid for by the community to be an adult ed center. "We're having a budget crisis. If we had another school, we could house our own programs and lease out space," rationalizes Superintendent Bob Nuñez of East Side. Alum Rock Trustee Gustavo Gonzalez worries that the increased demand for housing in the Northern portion of the Alum Rock Elementary School District will exacerbate the problem of bussing students to schools.
No secret here -- Councilmember Pierluigi Oliverio thinks building more housing (especially in his District) is a bad idea. Taking a page out of a previous Redevelopment Agency model, Oliverio wants the jobs to arrive first before housing is built. Watch Dog recalls downtown San Jose as a vacant ghost town while the Redevelopment desperately sought to bring in business before housing...it has progressed now into a semi-ghost town -- at least it is progress...
Environment vs. golf course in Morgan Hill. Who wins this battle, the red-legged frog or Fry's Electronics magnate John Fry? While Mathematics Institute officials hold up images of a golf course claiming it's environmentally friendly because grass is green, the Audubon Society's Craig Breon warns, "... there's still a violation of the Endangered Species Act that the City could be liable for so I think it's very important for (them) to get an indemnification agreement." In other words, someone is going to be held responsible for the red-legged frog, so wise up.
Home is where the heart is...apparently it's also where the support is. A study by the Knight Foundation found area residents want more, "third spaces," social gathering spots ranging from nightclubs to community centers. Check out the Soul of the Community yourself. San Jose's Mayor Chuck Reed wondered whether the diverse ethnic makeup of the Valley was taken into account in the study doubting residents want more gathering spots.
Santa Clara County businesses rank among the lowest in hiring women in leadership roles -- according to a state-wide study conducted by UC Davis. A related study finds women in middle management quit due to a perception of barriers to advancement. Perhaps this is the trend San Jose Mayor Chuck Reed is trying to stem with the discussion of Nora Campos as Vice Mayor...
San Jose Revealed declares this Fluff Week and pokes fun at the San Jose Film and Video Commission for exercising a Silicon Valley tradition -- leveraging the work of others.
Meanwhile, it looks like Mission City Lantern is getting its news from Watch Dog.
The smoke police seem to be happy to help out on Spare the Air days. The most creative reason for having a fire goes to a Pantheist who emailed the Bay Area Air Quality Management District saying, "I will NOT be deprived of my constitutionally guaranteed right to freedom of religion by bureaucrats looking for more ways to control even more aspects of our lives." Watch Dog is researching religions that mandate wood-burning stoves…
